Sustainable Greystones

Sustainable Greystones is a group of local residents who have come together to harness the immense potential in our community by bringing people together to imagine and create a better and happier environment where people feel more empowered, and develop a greater sense of purpose through engagement and participation. Our mission is to build a brighter and more sustainable future for Greystones that supports the well-being of our community and protects our natural environment through community engagement, inclusive participation and locally driven solutions. We aim to achieve our mission by strengthening a sense of community and increasing participation at a local level. In our planning we are using some proven methodologies developed by the Transition network https://transitionnetwork.org a movement of communities that has been growing since 2005.

There are more than 1000 international towns and cities that are following the movement across the globe. These are Community-led groups that are working for a low-carbon, socially just future with resilient communities, encouraging a more caring culture focused on supporting each other. In practice, they are using collaborative, people-centred methods to imagine the changes we need, setting up renewable energy projects, re-localising food systems and creating community and green spaces, building community connection and care. Some of our projects to date include partnering the national initiative that is Street Feast and encouraging local Greystones residents to come together and have a DIY party in their particular neighbourhood on May 25/26th 2024. Thirty five such parties happened in the community in 2023. We also created the 2023 Bet Against the Casino campaign to garner local support preventing the presence of a casino and gaming venue in the town. Sustainable Greystones also supported locals to successfully lobby for 30kmph speed limits within the town.

Other projects underway include Leader Application for Funding to support improved Beach and Sea Swimming Amenities in the town; Leader Application for Funding a Climate Action Project under the GIY umbrella; and a potential Community Orchard and Food Forest. We will actively support locally driven solutions for reopening the Bray to Greystones Cliff Walk.
