About Greystones Town Team
Greystones Town Team (GTT) was established as the successor to Greystones 2020, an initiative founded by Cllr Grainne McLoughlin in 2015. The mission was to create a vibrant, sustainable, and community-oriented environment in response to the abolition of the Greystones Town Council in 2014. Greystones 2020 partnered with Wicklow County Council and Greystones Municipal District (GMD) to develop the Greystones Public Realm Plan, laying the foundation for various community improvements.
Under the leadership of Tom O'Mahony, GTT continues to thrive with dedicated volunteers. The team has expanded its scope, with subgroups focusing on Public Realm, Tidy Towns, Arts, Culture, Tourism, Infrastructure, and Heritage, among others. Greystones 2020 needed to access Leader Funding and other funding streams, which, along with the need to align with the Town Centre First Government policy directive, drove the decision to convert Greystones 2020 to a Town Team. GTT was formed on 30 September 2021 as the successor to Greystones 2020. Since incorporation, the Business Retail and Economic Development subgroup has separately formed to become the East Wicklow Business Network and a member of GTT. In 2022, Sustainable Greystones became a member of GTT. In 2023, GTT formed two new subgroups – Community Wellbeing & Engagement and Youth, Sports & Wellness.
A Town Team is a coordinating body of active town stakeholders that brings together community groups, the voluntary sector, and business organisations to work collaboratively with local government for the benefit of the community.
GTT organises a range of community events and festivals, such as St. Patrick's Day, Picnic in the Park, and the Light Up Greystones Santa Tour and Lights. These events, run entirely by volunteers, play a crucial role in bringing joy and unity to the community, demonstrating that such vibrant celebrations wouldn't happen without their dedication. GTT also works closely with Wicklow County Council and the Greystones Municipal District to secure funding for projects focused on public realm improvements, climate action, and community development.
